Women and Trans ADVANCED Class Scheduled

Sundays, 1/2/11 - 1/23/11, from 5pm-7pm
The Women and Trans advanced class is identical to the co-ed advanced class except that it is taught by women in an intentional environment meant to empower women and folks who have not benefited from male privilege. The course is a series of 4 classes that are 2 hours each. Students will overhaul a rear hub, true wheels, overhaul a headset, and replace a front derailleur cableset.
Prerequisite: Basic Class
Space is limited so sign up today!

3 Speed Hub Overhaul Seminar!!

Overhaul a classic internally geared 3 speed hub in this 4 hour one day seminar on Sunday, December 12th from 1-5pm.
Prerequisite includes completion of the Advanced Class, some internal hub knowledge or approval from the instructor.
Cost: $60 plus parts, which can range between $30 - $150.
Hubs are not provided. Students must bring in their own hub, which must predate Sun Race's purchase of Sturmey Archer (pre-2000). Students are encouraged to bring in their hub before the day of the seminar if they have questions about this or to have their hub approved by a Broadway employee.
Enrollment is limited so call or stop by the shop to sign up today.

The Basic Repair Course starting SUNDAY, AUGUST 22nd, will now begin SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th, and run until OCTOBER 10th, 5:30 - 7:30pm.

The Women and Trans Basic Repair Course will now begin on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17th, and run until NOVEMBER 21th, 5:30 - 7:30pm. Note that it skips OCTOBER 31st.

Reconditioned Road Bike just in time for Summer!

We've just added a 58cm Paramount road bike to our fleet of reconditioned bicycles for sale. The frame was hand-built by Waterford Precision Cycles in Wisconsin back in the 80s for Scwhinn. The bike was originally destined for triathalons hence the 650c wheelset, but it is a blast to ride on the road no matter what your purpose. It is equipped with Shimano DuraAce brake levers and headset, and Shimano Ultegra (9 speed) bar end shifters, derailleurs, cranks, brakes and hubs. Brand new Continential folding tires will keep you rolling down the road mile after mile. A flashback to the decade of confidence, this bike is highlighter yellow with black splatter paint and will make some lucky rider the envy of all their friends at only $585.00

Pancake Breakfast / Raffle Benefiting Bikes Not Bombs Tuesday May 18th!

As promised, we've got some more details about the raffle we'll be hosting on Tuesday.

The raffle is a benefit for Bikes Not Bombs. If you don't know about Bikes Not Bombs, they are a great non-profit in Boston that recycles bicycles from the waste-stream. They use the bicycles to teach young people to fix bikes and ride safely locally and as tools for sustainable development abroad. They are a great place to take that bike that's sitting in your garage or basement longing for a good home.

Bikes Not Bombs is having their yearly bike ride/fundraiser event, the Bike-a-Thon, on June 6th. Check into registering for the 15, 25 or 65 mile ride and sticking around for the GreenRoots Festival.

Now, on to the PRIZES!!!

First and foremost, there will be pancakes for all. That is one heck of a prize for just riding your bike to the bike shop! We'll have vegan and not vegan pancakes. Some plain, others with berries, bananas, chocolate chips, and other good stuff.

Coffee and O.J. will also be served. And the last minute addition of Taza Hot Chocolate straight out of Somerville has been brought to my attention. Thanks Taza!

It's That Time of Year Again...Bike Month

But really, what month isn't 'Bike Month' at the Broadway Bicycle School. Here most of us tend to ride our bicycles regardless of what month it is, but the month of May gets some special recognition for cyclists locally and nationally and it is easy to get excited about that.

We try to do our part during Bike Month and Bike to Work Week here in Cambridge.

We donated some killer prizes to the MassCommuter Challenge Bike Bash.

And who could forget our annual Bike to Work Week Pancake Breakfast. We don't know exactly how long we've been doing the pancake breakfast, but I did find this article in the Harvest Coop Times from 1996 - that's 14 years of serving pancakes to bike commuters in Cambridge! Here's a peak into all the fun we had at last year's Pancake Breakfast.

This year Bike to Work Week starts on May 17th.

Our Pancake Breakfast for Bike Commuters is on Tuesday May 18th, 2010 from 7:30am to 9:30am.

Aside from the best pancakes, coffee and o.j. you've ever been served in a bike shop, we'll also be hosting a raffle to benefit Bikes Not Bombs. We've got some great raffle prizes from Planet Bike, Salsa Cycles, Lazer Helmets, Civia Cycles, a sick fixie wheelset from Origin8 and more. Raffle tickets will be $2 each or 3 for $5. And all proceeds go to Bikes Not Bombs.

Beginner's Bicycle Ride to Bikes Not Bombs

Join Broadway Bicycle School mechanic Dan Pugatch on Sunday, May 23rd for a relaxed bicycle ride to Bikes Not Bombs in Jamaica Plain. Departing from Broadway Bicycle School at noon we will ride along the bicycle lanes from Cambridge into Boston where we will take the Southwest Corridor bike path to BNB. Once there we will be taken on a brief tour of Bikes Not Bombs and we'll get an insider's perspective into this unique organization.
Please try to arrive at our shop in Cambridge 15 minutes early to pump up your tires and go over a few safety tips. Helmets are required, no exceptions, and water bottles and locks are recommended. There is a cafe next door to BNB where we will be stopping before we make our way back to Cambridge. The ride will end around 3:30-4:00.

A long time contributor of the Door 3 Gallery, Christian Monroe Henry has delighted, horrified and confused the people of Boston for the past 2 years by participating in the Gallery's group shows from his home in Portland, OR. Now, Henry will truly create wonder with his mastery in illustrated graphic panels with this, his first Door 3 Gallery solo show.

Women and Trans Basic Mechanics Class Now Scheduled!

The course is identical to the co-ed basic mechanics class except that it is taught by women in an intentional environment meant to empower women and folks who do not benefit from male privilege. This week we are featuring Pedros chain lube. All of the Pedros chain lubes that we stock will be 20% off through March 22. These lubricants are fairly new to BBS and we are all very excited about this line in particular because they are all biodegradable! No kidding, they're better for the earth and easier on your hands.
Along with airing your tires, lubricating your chain is the most important bit of regular maintenance you can do on your bike. Chain lube will make your ride much smoother and more enjoyable while helping to slow down chain and drivetrain wear. During the winter/spring months lubrication becomes more vital because of the snow and rain that will rinse away any oil on your chain. Stop by to pick up a bottle and to pick up a tip or two about proper application.

Very cool news from Google maps yesterday - you can now get biking directions! The map generated when you select biking directions shows bike trails (marked with dark green), streets that have bike lanes (light green) and streets that are recommended for biking (dotted green). According to Google the route you will get is "optimized for cycling, taking advantage of bike trails, bike lanes, and bike-friendly streets and avoiding hilly terrain whenever possible".

Hi Folks! This week all lights at BBS will be 20% off. That's right, ALL lights: front, rear, helmet mounted, rack mounted, battery operated, rechargeable, etc. Lights are a very necessary safety feature of your biking experience (and front lights are required by law!). For those of you who don't currently own lights and have found yourself riding more and more after the sun goes down, now is the time to get yourself set up with a pair. Also worth stopping by to see is Planet Bike's relatively new Blaze series. These front lights come in 1/2 watt, 1 watt, and 2 watt versions. The Graduate Has Arrived!

Torker has produced a new bicycle with classic European sophistication and functionality. The Graduate is a great multi-use city bike that features front and rear drum-brakes and a 5-speed internally geared hub by Sturmey-Archer. Internal gearing and drum-brakes means durable, weather-resistant machinery that will function reliably in any kind of riding condition that the old New England weather can muster. And it comes standard with mud-guards (that’s European for “fenders“.) This would make an ideal bike for quick trips to the fromagerie, rigorous commutes, or just around campus. And at only $500, this is a ride that will pay for itself in less than 6 months (compared to an MBTA commute.)

It's funny how much the Graduate resembles the old English 3-Speeds that the Broadway Bicycle School has been known for reconditioning for years...seems like the rest of the bike industry is starting to catch on to what we knew all along. Best Folding Bicycle Ever...

...at least that's what we think. Broadway Bicycle School became a Brompton folding bicycle dealer on paper this past December. And the Bromptons have landed. We knew they were coming, but they still caught us a little by surprise. It was hard to believe that Brompton could deliver 3 custom folding bicycles, hand-made in West-London, England to our door in less than 5 weeks. But they did it. Exactly as promised. Amazing.

If you haven't seen a Brompton folding bicycle in person they are definitely worth taking a look. You will be impressed. And, if you come on by and check them out we can show you how easy they fold and how fun they are to ride! Not to mention how much sense a bicycle like this makes in Cambridge and Boston.

Your new wheel will be stronger than any factory built wheel and give you miles of happiness.

Our Prices on these wheels are as follows:

$48 per wheel PLUS PARTS (rim, hub, spokes, nipples)
$55 per wheel PLUS PARTS if it is an Aero Wheel (these are harder to lace) and an extra $.15 per nipple for these special sized
$10-20 per wheel to dismantle your old wheel and REUSE your hub if it's in good shape still

It's Above Freezing and We're Fixin' Bikes...

First Broadway blog post of 2010. We're still here working in the shop. Fixing bikes. Keeping your bicycles functional this winter. And teaching you how to do the same.

This year's been a little snowy this first week, but it is nice and sunny and even feels warm today.

Some Broadway updates for the first week of the year:

1. We decided to continue the bike sale. That's right. All bikes are 10 to 20% off. This includes in-store models and special orders. If you're thinking of getting a new bicycle in 2010 now might be the right time. Sale will be over on February 15th (President's Day).

2. There's still time to sign up for January Wheel Building Class at Broadway! The class starts next Monday, January 11th. Maybe you've always wanted to learn to build your own wheels? Or maybe you want a super-durable wheel for commuting, bike touring, racing, training or just plain riding around? Wheel truing experience is recommended. For more info check out our classes page.

3. This winter has already promised to be cold and snowy. We've got studded tires on sale - 10-20% off - in 700c and 26" sizes.

4. We've also got all of our fine Brooks saddles on sale - 15% off. Maybe you want one? I know I do!
