The Six P's - An Interesting read...

Here's a great article written by Matt Roy of MMRacing. He writes about a little trip he, Jason Elhardt of Haverhill, Ma based Pedros and our very own David Wilcox took to Puerto Rico earlier this year to do some work for the opening of the ToroVerde Adventure Park, a 300+ acre eco-tourist destination in the geographical center of the island. Read about the six-P's and the adventure they had in Puerto Rico here.

Pancake Breakfast / Raffle Benefiting Bikes Not Bombs Tuesday May 18th!

As promised, we've got some more details about the raffle we'll be hosting on Tuesday.

The raffle is a benefit for Bikes Not Bombs. If you don't know about Bikes Not Bombs, they are a great non-profit in Boston that recycles bicycles from the waste-stream. They use the bicycles to teach young people to fix bikes and ride safely locally and as tools for sustainable development abroad. They are a great place to take that bike that's sitting in your garage or basement longing for a good home.

Bikes Not Bombs is having their yearly bike ride/fundraiser event, the Bike-a-Thon, on June 6th. Check into registering for the 15, 25 or 65 mile ride and sticking around for the GreenRoots Festival.

Now, on to the PRIZES!!!

First and foremost, there will be pancakes for all. That is one heck of a prize for just riding your bike to the bike shop! We'll have vegan and not vegan pancakes. Some plain, others with berries, bananas, chocolate chips, and other good stuff.

Coffee and O.J. will also be served. And the last minute addition of Taza Hot Chocolate straight out of Somerville has been brought to my attention. Thanks Taza!

The actual prizes include:

O2 Helmet from Lazer
Flip-Off Skewers from Salsa
Skull Caps from Planet Bike
Cycling Caps from Salsa
Socks from Salsa
BC 509 Computer from Sigma Sport
Blaze/Superflash Light Sets from Planet Bike
Cascadia Fenders in 45mm from Planet Bike
Flip Flop Wheelset in Green Colorway from Origin8
Singleator Wrench/Bottle Opener from Surly
T-Shirts from Civia
Bar Tape, Water Bottles, Pumps, Glasses, and More!

Raffle tickets are $2 each, or 3 for $5. They will be available during the pancake breakfast and we will draw for the winners after 9:30 am Tuesday.

Thanks to Taza Chocolate, Quality Bicycle Products, Seattle Bike Supply, J&B Importers, Planet Bike and Downeast Bicycle Specialists for contributing to the raffle!

Come on down on Tuesday morning! Have some pancakes, buy some raffle tickets and enjoy the good company!

It's That Time of Year Again...Bike Month

But really, what month isn't 'Bike Month' at the Broadway Bicycle School. Here most of us tend to ride our bicycles regardless of what month it is, but the month of May gets some special recognition for cyclists locally and nationally and it is easy to get excited about that.

We try to do our part during Bike Month and Bike to Work Week here in Cambridge.

We donated some killer prizes to the MassCommuter Challenge Bike Bash.

And who could forget our annual Bike to Work Week Pancake Breakfast. We don't know exactly how long we've been doing the pancake breakfast, but I did find this article in the Harvest Coop Times from 1996 - that's 14 years of serving pancakes to bike commuters in Cambridge! Here's a peak into all the fun we had at last year's Pancake Breakfast.

This year Bike to Work Week starts on May 17th.

Our Pancake Breakfast for Bike Commuters is on Tuesday May 18th, 2010 from 7:30am to 9:30am.

Aside from the best pancakes, coffee and o.j. you've ever been served in a bike shop, we'll also be hosting a raffle to benefit Bikes Not Bombs. We've got some great raffle prizes from Planet Bike, Salsa Cycles, Lazer Helmets, Civia Cycles, a sick fixie wheelset from Origin8 and more. Raffle tickets will be $2 each or 3 for $5. And all proceeds go to Bikes Not Bombs.

Stay tuned for more details on the raffle.

Extended Summer Hours

Our hours officially changed today for the summer. We are now open every weekday at 8am! Stop by on your way to work or school - we will be here!

Part Of The Week!

The drawer containing our cloth handlebar tape has been looking rather pathetic in recent years. Customers who come in to see our selection often go away empty handed or reluctantly buy synthetic cork tape simply because nobody has been making cloth tape in a wide variety of colors that's readily available. Well, thanks to Newbaums we have 14 new colors of cloth handlebar tape in stock. And what's really exciting to us is that Newbaums cloth tape is designed and manufactured in the U.S.A. and they are made with renewable resources and eco-friendly dyes! Stop in this week and take 15% off of every purchase of Newbaums tape. Sale ends Monday, April 12.

Beginner Bike Ride

Just started riding again after years of cobwebs collecting on your trusty ole bicycle? Weekend warrior and a little nervous about joining the ranks of daily commuters? Its time to get off the sidewalks and bike paths and ride in the streets! Join our mechanic Dan on a slow paced relaxed beginners ride Sunday April 25th from 1230pm-230pm. Helmets are a must, no exceptions, bring water and spare change for a stop at a local ice cream shop.

Learn the rules of the road and build confidence riding on two wheels along those inside four. Some of our riders from our last year rides became comfortable enough to stop using public transportation and started riding to work daily! Sponsored by the MassBike Spin Series. Please RSVP by emailing danbikerides@hotmail.com

PART OF THE WEEK!

Kleen Kanteen has been around for a while now making their wonderful stainless steel water bottles and we've been carrying them for several years. Durable in construction, lightweight and free of toxins, its hard to argue that there's a better bottle out there. We've typically stocked the Kleen Kanteen in it's original brushed stainless finish but this week we received a handful of bottles in a variety of vibrant colors. For the next week at Broadway Bicycle School all Kleen Kanteen products will be 15% off. Sale ends 3/29/10.
